The land on which the flea market was held was originally a salt marsh with a stream, and by the early 19th century the Fly Market was the main market in the entire city of New York.<\/p>\n<p>A second theory holds that &#8220;flea market&#8221; is a common English calque of the French &#8220;march\u00e9 aux puces&#8221;, which literally translates to &#8220;flea market&#8221;, labeled as such because the items sold were used and worn, and likely contained really fleas. The first reference to this term appeared in two conflicting stories about a place in Paris in the 1860s that was known as the &#8220;march\u00e9 aux puces&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The traditional interpretation.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The traditional and most publicized story is in the article &#8220;<span style=\"color: #2c2f7f;\"><b><em>What Is a Flea Market?<\/em><\/b><\/span>&#8221; of <span style=\"color: #2c2f7f;\"><b><em>Albert La Farge<\/em><\/b><\/span> in the winter 1998 edition of the magazine <span style=\"color: #2c2f7f;\"><b>Today&#8217;s Flea Market<\/b><\/span>: &#8220;<em>There is general agreement that the term &#8220;Flea Market&#8221; is a literal translation of the French &#8220;march\u00e9 aux puces&#8221;, an open-air bazaar in Paris, France, named for those pesky little pests of the order Siphonaptera ( or &#8220;wingless bloodsuckers&#8221;) that infested the upholstery of old furniture offered for sale.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>A different interpretation on the birth of the term &#8220;flea market&#8221;.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A second story appeared in the book <span style=\"color: #2c2f7f;\"><b>Flea Markets<\/b><\/span>, published by<span style=\"color: #2c2f7f;\"><b>Chartwell Books<\/b><\/span>: &#8220;<em>In the time of Napoleon III, the imperial architect Haussmann designed the wide, straight avenues with rows of square houses in the center of Paris, along which army divisions could march with great noise. The plans forced many second-hand goods dealers to flee their old homes; the alleys and slums were demolished. These evicted merchants were however allowed to continue selling their goods right in the north of Paris, just outside the former fort, opposite the Porte de Clignancourt. The first stalls were erected around 1860. The gathering of all these &#8220;exiles&#8221; from the slums of Paris was soon called the &#8220;march\u00e9 aux puces&#8221;<\/em> which means, precisely, &#8220;flea market&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Another interpretation starts from the possible &#8220;confusion&#8221; between the English term &#8220;flee&#8221; (escaped, escaped) with, then, &#8220;flea&#8221;.
