1986 was a decisive year in Gianfranco Ferré’s creative path: driven by an inner need, he created the first Gianfranco Ferré Alta Moda collection, presented in Rome in the gardens of the Casino dell’Aurora of Palazzo Pallavicini Rospigliosi, which gave new life and prestige to the Week of fashion of Rome. At the end of the Week, some items from the Autumn/Winter 1986-87 collection were paraded on the Trinità dei Monti steps in Piazza di Spagna, taking part in the first edition of the Donne sotto le stelle event, broadcast on RAI Uno.

The arrival at haute couture was in fact a natural continuation of working in ready-to-wear, while respecting the specificity of the expressive paths and the different working skills of each ‘field of action’: «doing the haute fashion – he explained – I learned many things: there was an exchange, with the premières with whom I worked, and who will work for me, in a superb way. I brought my experience of ready-to-wear, they brought my experience of high fashion: therefore of high craftsmanship, given that the garments are all finished by hand, entirely sewn by hand” (Alfonsi, 2008, p. 87).

Gianfranco Ferré Biography

Italian designer (Legnano 1944 – Milan 2007). Having graduated in architecture (1969), he approached fashion by creating accessories and costume jewellery. After undertaking numerous trips to India and working as a freelancer for W. Albini and Ch. Bailly, in 1974 he designed the Baila clothing line for F. Mattioli, the entrepreneur who would become his partner for 25 years. With the latter he founded Gianfranco Ferré S.p.A. (1978), presenting the first women’s ready-to-wear collection. From the very beginning, F.’s creations stood out for their decisive lines and architectural volumes. In 1982 he presented a men’s line, which was followed by lines of accessories and products made under license. In 1986 he debuted in Rome with his first haute couture collection. After being artistic director of Christian Dior (1989-96), in 1998 he inaugurated the new headquarters of his fashion house in Milan. In 2000 he sold 90% of the company to T. Perna who in 2002 integrated it into IT Holding; however, F. retained the roles of honorary president and artistic director. Upon his death, the presidency was inherited by Perna himself.
